South Asian Woodblock Course

Introduction to South Asian Woodblock Printing

Discover the beauty and tradition of South Asian woodblock printing in this fun, beginner-friendly, four-day workshop! Inspired by the vibrant printing traditions of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, you’ll learn how to design, carve, and print your own handmade creations using classic motifs and simple tools. Join artist, Ragavee Balendran as she guides you through the craft of printing and this history of the art form.

Day 1 kicks things off with a warm welcome and an introduction to the fascinating history of block printing. You’ll explore beautiful traditional designs—like paisleys, florals, and mandalas—and start sketching your own motif inspired by these timeless patterns.

On Day 2, you’ll roll up your sleeves and learn the basics of carving your own woodblock. With step-by-step guidance, you’ll safely use carving tools, transfer your design to wood, and start bringing your block to life.

Day 3 is all about printing magic! You’ll learn how to ink your block and make your first test prints on paper or fabric. There’s plenty of time to experiment, tweak your design, and prepare for your final print.

Finally, on Day 4, you’ll create your finished prints on a surface of your choice—like a cotton square, tote bag, or handmade paper. The day wraps up with a friendly gallery walk, where everyone shares their work, inspirations, and favourite moments from the course.

By the end, you’ll have a set of beautiful, hand-printed pieces to take home, plus a new appreciation for the art, culture, and creativity behind South Asian woodblock printing.
