Music In The Museum: February

zerOclassikal presents an afternoon of South Asian classical ragas performed live in the stunning Victorian-era Drawing Room at Wardown House, Museum and Gallery, this time with a special Carnatic double bill featuring Mithila Sarma (veena) and Aditi Subramaniam (vocals), accompanied by Senthuran Premakumar (mridangam).

Mithila Sarma is a London-born South Asian classical musician trained in East London with further training from India since the age of seven. She represents a growing number of musicians from the South Asian heritage training in South Asian classical music, looking at exploring new ideas within the genre. Mithila has previously performed with zerOclassikal as part of Brighton Festival. Mithila was also commissioned to create a new piece by zerOclassikal. Titled ‘One’, the piece focuses on the Veena, bringing an ensemble of three Vainikas (veena players) together to experiment and push the limits of the instrument’s unique bass tones, multi-octave sounds and rich gamakas.

Aditi Subramaniam has been learning Carnatic music since the age of 6. Aditi has performed in various venues across the UK and during the Margazhi season in Chennai. She was awarded 'SAMYO young musician of the year' in 2016 by the National Indian Arts Awards UK and has collaborated with several organisations including Indian Raga and Milapfest.

Senthuran Premakumar is a talented mridangist, who was the youngest ever recipient of the ‘Asian Music Circuit Award’, a music scholarship, which allowed him the privilege of undertaking formal lessons in Mridangam. He has accompanied several leading artists from India on the mridangam including Lalgudi G J R Krishnan, Sikkil Mala Chandrasekar and the Carnatic Brothers to name a few, and has previously performed with zerOclassikal at Mehfil-e-Rose Hill as part of Brighton Festival.

Enjoy ragas performed by some of the UK’s most talented young musicians, surrounded by the museum's unique art and scenic views.
