Luton Matters Commission – Artist Unveiling

News 12 Jun 2025, 2:02pm

We are delighted to announce the unveiling of Priya Ramkissoon as the Lead Artist and Ragavee Balendran as a Factory Associate Artist for the latest Luton Matters commission, which will focus on celebrating and exploring South Asian Heritage.

This new phase of the Luton Matters programme continues our commitment to platforming diverse artistic voices and community narratives. Through this commission, Priya and Ragavee will collaboratively develop a vibrant and resonant artistic project that reflects the depth, complexity, and richness of South Asian heritage in Luton.

‘Borderlight (where cultures meet and radiate) will be a community-led South Asian installation that celebrates tradition, heritage, and identity through a contemporary lens. Using fluorescent and glow-in-the-dark acrylics inspired by cultural motifs, the piece is co-created through workshops that celebrate local voices and stories. Bridging generations and geographies, the installation also connects with the South Asian diaspora in Houston, USA, where parallel workshops encourage shared creativity and cross-cultural dialogue.’

The project will unfold over the coming months, engaging local communities through creative workshops and a new set of public art commissions in the Hat District. Further details about upcoming activities and opportunities to get involved will be announced soon.

Stay tuned as we begin this exciting journey, amplifying South Asian heritage through art, collaboration, and community.

Luton Matters is funded by the Steel Charitable Trust and delivered by the Culture Trust.
