Renowned international Baroque violinist Penelope Spencer, celebrated for her exceptional interpretations of 17th and 18th-century solo violin repertoire, has captivated audiences worldwide. Penelope's illustrious career has seen her perform on leading international stages as a member of the English Baroque Soloists and concertmaster of the New London Consort. Her passion for the solo violin works of J.S. Bach and dedication to exploring the Baroque era's rich musical language promises a very special afternoon of exquisite musicianship and artistry.
Biography
Penelope Spencer
Penelope Spencer´s career as a baroque violinist spans 30 years in which time she has lived in New Zealand, England, The Netherlands and Germany. She studied in the Netherlands with Sigiswald Kuijken and Alda Stuurop, graduating in 1998 with Uitvoerende Musicus cum Laude. Work with La Petite Bande and the Nederlandse Bachvereniging provided invaluable orchestral experience, but the many and varied baroque chamber music opportunities in The Hague at that time formed the basis of her musical development.
From 1999 to 2003, Penelope was a member of the English Baroque Soloists, directed by Sir John Eliot Gardiner. During that time she performed internationally and recorded on over 45 CDs as a member of that orchestra. From 2004 to 2006 Penelope devoted herself to her own chamber music series “Realm of Music” with regular Concerts in both London and St. Albans.
In 2008 Penelope was appointed Concertmaster of the New London Consort. She went on to perform in as principal violinist with NLC for a further 7 years with 32 international tours in 27 different countries.
In 2017, Penelope Moved to Munich with her husband and two children where she continues to perform as Concertmaster, Soloist and Chamber musician, and also enjoys teaching at baroque Chamber music seminars. Penelope’s particular interest in the solo violin repertoire of the 17th and 18th century inspired her solo programme “Soul Voice”, where she explores the solo violin repertoire leading up to J.S. Bach, and her lecture-recital videos of the Bach solo violin works.
She plays on a violin by Gennaro Vinaccia, Naples ca.1755.
